Microsoft has given its most ringing endorsement
of open source Web browsers to date with chief executive officer Steve
Ballmer not ruling out adopting such technology as an alternative to
its own popular Internet Explorer, saying it is "interesting".

In Sydney to speak at a Power to Developers
event, Ballmer ignited the audience with his powerful "Developers!
Developers! Developers!" chant, but was surprised to hear a question
about open source browser adoption from one of his student
constituents.

"Why is IE still relevant and why is it worth
spending money on rendering engines when there are open source ones
available that can respond to changes in Web standards faster?"

"That's cheeky, but a good question, but cheeky," Ballmer said.

Indeed it is. If I was a Microsoft share ... Read more »

OGAKI, Gifu -- A 9-year-old boy is in police custody after he took his family's car on a drive to visit his grandmother.

Police received a call at around 7:30 a.m. on Monday from a passerby
saying there was a car driving along a prefectural road without anyone
at the wheel. An officer subsequently found the boy sitting in the
driver's seat of an automatic small car in a nearby convenience store
parking lot.

"It's my first time driving, but I learned from watching dad and playing at the video arcade," he told police.

The boy told police that he'd taken the car from the family home at
around 6 a.m. He was planning to visit his grandmother in nearby
Sekigahara, but had got lost.

The boy is around 135 cm in height, and managed to control the car
by sitting at the front of the seat and clinging to wheel, allowing him
to reach the pedals.

The second Release Candidate for FreeBSD 6.4 is now available. FreeBSD
6.4-RC2 should be the last of the public test builds for the FreeBSD 6.4
release cycle. Unless a big show-stopper is found from this round of
testing we should begin the 6.4-RELEASE builds in about a week and a
half. We encourage you to test out 6.4-RC2 and report any problems by
submitting PRs or via email to the freebsd-stable list.

One of the things that could use some testing is the late-arriving
patches to sysinstall that should eliminate the excessive disc swapping
that previous releases had if things like gnome or kde were installed as
part of the initial CDROM install. Things selected before you reach the
"Package Selection Menu" are handled as separate passes from the things
that get selected at that menu. So depending on what you install before
you reach that menu (e.g. Xorg selected as part of the distributions)
and what you select at that menu there may sti ... Read more »

Theora is a video codec with a small CPU footprint that offers easy
portability and requires no patent royalties. While the Theora
bitstream format was standardized in 2004 and our beta releases have
been used by millions, this 1.0 release is an important milestone
reflecting the maturity and stability of the Theora codebase.

A number of leading multimedia web groups already support Theora.
Upcoming releases of Mozilla Firefox, the world's most popular open
source browser, will support Theora natively, as will releases of the
multi-platform Opera browser. Top-10 website Wikipedia uses Theora
for all of its video. "Open media formats are critical for ensuring a
future where everyone can create and share media freely," says Kat
Walsh, Wikimedia Foundation board member, "and so we congratulate
Xiph.org on this important achievement." Theora's success in these
applications paves the way for wi ... Read more »
